Mark

Hey, I'm Mark!

I'm building RetireNumber in the open.

Most retirement calculators feel like they were built by a bank trying to sell you something. They either oversimplify things to the point of being useless, or they want access to your bank accounts so they can monetize your data. RetireNumber exists because neither of those options was good enough.

What started as a side project has turned into something genuinely useful for checking in on a retirement plan every week. The engine does real math: Monte Carlo simulations, historical backtesting back to 1928, tax-aware withdrawal strategies and scenario comparison. Once it became clear how much value it provided, it made sense to open it up to everyone.

There's no company behind RetireNumber. No investors, no board meetings, no sales team. Just one person writing code, shipping features and paying for the servers. The entire business model is Pro subscriptions. That's it. Your data doesn't get sold, shared or used for anything other than powering your projections.

This project is being built in the open because that's how good software should be made. Every update gets posted to the changelog, and anyone who wants to shape what comes next can join the Discord or send a message. Thanks for stopping by!

Principles

Your data is yours.

No selling, no sharing, no ads running against it. The business model is Pro subscriptions and nothing else. Delete your account and everything goes with it, permanently.

No account linking. Ever.

RetireNumber will never ask for a bank login. All numbers are entered manually, which means there's no third-party aggregator sitting between you and your accounts, nothing to hack and no way for anyone to see your actual balances.

Real math, not marketing math.

The projection engine uses Robert Shiller's dataset from Yale going back to 1928. Monte Carlo runs 1,000 simulations. Backtesting checks your plan against every 30-year period in modern market history. You won't see a rosy projection designed to get you to sign up.

Built for regular people.

RetireNumber was built out of personal need. This isn't financial advice and there's no financial advisor behind it. It's a tool for people who want to think clearly about their retirement number and whether they're actually on track.

Feedback, ideas and people who care about getting this right are what make the project better. If that sounds like you, the door is open.
